For Durga Thakur, one coastal field visit crystallised an entire career path. Watching dolphins surface and move alongside her boat in their natural habitat was both exciting and humbling, a reminder of exactly why she chose to study marine sciences, and a moment that deepened her commitment to marine conservation.
Durga Thakur’s Work in Marine Conservation
An M.Sc. Marine Sciences candidate at Goa University with a B.Sc. in Zoology, Durga blends fieldwork with science communication. Her experience spans coastal biodiversity surveys, intertidal field studies, mangrove ecosystem assessments, GIS-based environmental mapping, and marine ecology and fisheries work along the west coast of India, all of which she channels into awareness content for social media. With 1–3 years in the field, she works with primary and middle-school groups on forest schools and tribal ecology.
Her spirit animal is the leopard, for a quietly confident reason: she admires how leopards don’t need to be the biggest or loudest to succeed. Her field essentials are simple, a water bottle and a notebook, the tools of a careful observer. And her philosophy grows directly from her science: the more time you spend observing nature, the more you realise how much there is still to learn.
